Talk to him in person. Make sure the timing is right... don't do it in front of friends or anywhere he can be embarrassed. Tell him why you are leaving and that your feelings just aren't there, and that you think he could find someone better suited for him instead of wasting his time with you. Make it seem like it's all you so that he doesn't beat himself up all the time... give him some time and space and hopefully he really will find someone more compatible and so will you, and you can laugh about it later.
